That is exactly how an accelerator proxy works.
Only, to get a 404, the 404 has to have come from the origin server in the
first place. Making users request each 404 twice is a waste.

Ah,
your Squid is saying: "I'm not allowed to talk to you. Go away!"
that is caused by a miss-configuration of squid.
You are blocking external requests for x.x.x.x/asd.
What do you have in squid.conf? and what version of squid?
