 Can't be of much assistance, further , I myself am using Linux
platform(s).

 On a long shot idea I can only suggest, that perhaps kernel tuning
 for fgets(), (certain params related to buffering), may be in place.

 But that is a wild shot. You may want to discuss the problem
 with fgets() on a free bsd discussion forum, e.g.
