Are you using Squid as a normal proxy, or is this a transparent proxy
or accelerator setup?
Proxy authentication only works in normal proxy usage.

Right, but using 1080 is probably a bad idea as this port is used by
SOCKS and you might want to run a SOCKS proxy on the same server.
