[squid-users] startup (Newbie)

I can start squid logged in as root but have read that it is not a good
idea. I have also read that squid backgrounds itself...it does't start for
me at bootup. I put the startup script in init.d but it doesn't seem to
run from there either. Any ideas? ver 2.3STABLE4 Linux Redhat 7.0
