I just encountered a pretty annoying reason why NOT to use wpad and IE's
autro configuration. If you use java applets.
The HR director administers the 401K for the company through webpages and
java applets at the 401K site. It worked fine when the proxy address was
typed in on Internet Options.
I setup wpad for auto configure and things seemed to be working well...
until the HR director tried to go to the 401K site and do some stuff.
The java applet was trying to direct connect for things like port 80 and 443
(stuff squid should proxy).
Apparently if you configure proxying with wpad, applets will not pick up the
proxy rules, whereas if you manually set them on PCs, the java applets will
use the OSes proxy rules.
I do not know how this works with autconfigure scripts (proxy.pac).
It seems if you want to use wpad, you have to use transparent proxying also
so as to force no browser based HTTP utilities to go through the proxy
server and not try to direct connect.
