try 'cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max' or look for something similar.
there is a word on increasing the max filedescriptors in the faq on
squid-cache.org
i didn't have to recompile the kernel to increase the max number of file
descriptors anyway.
/proc/sys/fs/file-max was 8192 all the time, but you have to change an
include file and execute
'ulimit -HSn 8192' before compiling squid. once it is compiled, you still
have to run the ulimit
command before each squid startup.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, how do I find out how many fds are in use at any given time?
Second, I am about to compile 2.4.5 kernel for the machine running
squid, where do I configure how many FDs are allowed? thanks,
