wget with wild cards does not work?

I have got the error from one of our users that using wget with wildcards does
not work if done via squid-2.1P2, only direct. The error looks like:

ftp://ftp.gwdg.de:21/pub/x11/kde/stable/1.1/distribution/tar/generic/source/bz2
/*.tar.bz2
   => `*.tar.bz2'
   Connecting to shadow.han.de:80... connected!
   Proxy request sent, awaiting response... 500 Internal Server Error
   15:56:34 ERROR 500: Internal Server Error.

The log file looks like:

Is wget or squid the one to blame? Or is it because wget uses a different
protocol if connecting directly?
