Just another viewpoint: we use Squid 2.0p2 under Solaris 2.5.1 and have found:

a) upgrading from 1.NOVM.22 was a big win - much less memory used by Squid
(and no leakage) and generally snappier performance. I guess I ought to move
to 2.1 or may be wait till 2.2?

b) We only run the discs 4-5 x 4Gb discs about 50% used for cache ie 8Gb
cache. This gives on our 3 caches, 4-8 days LRU time - depending on how many
students are here (up to max of 20,000). Extra cache space is not usually as
important as extra disc bandwidth.

So I am happy with Sun - but we use it because it is our standard platform and
it saves us effort to have only 1 Unix platform.
