yes, it probably runs out of memory.
I cant tell more either from the information you gave. To provide a more
detailed answer we need to know:
1. Cache size
2. cache_mem setting in squid.conf
3. squid version
4. amount of memory and swap available
5. Cachemgr may provice some clues on where the memory are used.
