Timeout error

I have compiled squid on a NetBSD 1.3 machine (a decstation), and
successfuly got it to run, but whenever I try to use it as a proxy, the
connection to the address I am requesting times out. Squid gives me the
connection timed out error. Any help would be appreciated.
