Further to my previous queries, here is what I managed to do :
1. As per your suggestions, I switched to 1.1.18 and made a build with
the -DALLOW_HOSTNAME_UNDERSCORES flag on.
It seems to work fine for URLs containing illegal syntax such as
underscores.
2. The forwarding issue seems to be resolved by configuring a
passthrough_proxy for methods other than GETs. It seems that
Squid always assumes that GET is the only cacheable method and
therefore other methods don't get routed via the
neighbour selection algorithm but need a seperate designated proxy.
Otherwise there would be a direct fetch attempt. At
least this is what I think is happening without actually having
browsed the code. Correct me if I'm wrong.
