This is not at all solid statistics but I ran a test where I filtered out
already processed requests that were likely to be still cached (no '?' or
'cgi-bin' and only 'GET's) and ran these through modified tcp-bangers on three
separate workstations. I ran about 10 bangers on each machine for a total of
about 30 busy (stripped down) bangers. I did not discriminate between large or
small objects, image or text.

For approx 2 hours my squid (on a Sun Ultra 140, 192 MB, 63 MB cache, 2*4GB
cache_swap) delivered at an average rate of ~60Hz with a CPU-usage average of
30%. I also looked at peak minute averages and the highest sustained rate for a
minute was ~230Hz. It often peaked above 200Hz. The server and the three
workstations were connected with 100Mbps through a fast switch.

As these bangers were requesting objects that almost always were already in the
cache and with the same sequence the vast majority of the requests were served
directly from in-memory cache.

So this test only gives a hint about how efficient squid is when faced with
the best case scenario. I suspect that If I could make the load more evenspread
and even heavier, squid would follow even above an 60Hz average.

This was just a test to see what happened but any comments or suggestions is
welcome.
