How about a (simple) script in the squid distribution that asks the user a series of questions:

        - where is your cache directory
        - how big is it?
        - who can access your cache
        - who can access the cachemgr.cgi info
        - do you have a parent or sibling? (if so? who so?)
        etc

and then generates an initial squid.conf.

Some proactive heuristics inside Squid could also be good to tell you
if you need to tune any parameters. Yes there are some there already.

IMHO a GUI or a web-based system (ala Netscape servers) to administer
Squid would be a mis-feature.
