Squid 1.0.20 - storeDirClean - not a directory

My squid proxy/cache kept crashing on my Linux 1.2.13 machine here. Examination of cache.log gave this ( shortly followed by a server restart)..

[11/Nov/1996:00:01:23 +1100] store_clean.c:79: storeDirClean: /usr/local/etc/squid/cache/01: (20) Not a directory

a ls -l of the file shows that it is indeed not a directory, but somehow has been created as a socket.. this file was no-t removable via rm -rf and my only fix was to mkfs the cache partition..

This has also been happening on my Solaris 2.5 machine as well..
