question about Squid server

I am running a squid project.
The project wants to develop a new web cache approach.
We want to change the LRU method to our approach.
I am unfamiliar Squid server.
Could I get some help from you?
I want to know which programs in squid about cache process?
For example, which programs handle the interchage of cache?
which programs set the TTL value? (the keep time of webpage)?
which programs catch the webpage from Internet?
